UN APCICTThe Asian and Pacific Training Centre for Information and Communication Technology for Development (UN-APCICT/ESCAP) was established in June, 2006, in Incheon, Republic of Korea. The Centre was founded with the objective of strengthening the efforts of the 62 ESCAP member and associate member countries to use information and communication technologies (ICTs) in their socio-economic development through building the human and institutional capacity for ICT. As a regional institute of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), APCICT aims to assist developing countries in the Asia-Pacific region to leverage the benefits presented by ICTs and achieve their socio-economic development goals.
Since its inception, APCICT has collaborated with partners from government, academia, the private sector, and local, regional and international organizations to deliver ICT human capacity building services through while adopting an integrated approach to the three pillars of its work—Training, Research and Knowledge Sharing, and Advisory Services.
APCICT’s flagship programme is the ‘Academy of ICT Essentials for Government Leaders’. It aims to build the capacities of policymakers and government officials in leveraging ICT for achieving national development goals. The programme includes a comprehensive 10 module ICT for Development (ICTD) training curriculum, and a wide network of partners that are working with APCICT to roll out the programme at the national level
In 2012, APCICT launched Primer 1: “An Introduction to ICT for Development”, which gives an introductory overview of how ICTs can be used to meet socio-economic development goals. The Primer Series is a part of APCICT’s flagship programme targeting youth, the “Turning Today’s Youth into Tomorrow’s Leaders Programme”, which works to develop a cadre of future leaders equipped with the capacity to use ICTs for achieving development goals. The APCICT programmes are also available in APCICT Virtual Academy, the online distance learning platform for the APCICT programmes. It is part of APCICT's strategy in diversifying its delivery channels to maximise access to the course materials of the APCICT programme and encourage continuous learning.
During its short, six-year history, APCICT has been applauded for the cutting-edge and comprehensive range of services it delivers, and for its larger efforts toward bridging the digital divide in the Asia-Pacific region and beyond.
